Like I told you all yesterday, I'm a sucker for Men's fashion. If ever I were to be a stylist, it would certainly be for the male species. I blame it on my brother who made me be his personal shopper for all those years (I loved every moment!).
So, this week, during the My Stylish Man edition of MSF, I wanted to talk about some essential things that every man needs or needs to know how to do. I think there are some basic things that a stylish man incorporates into his wardrobe that, maybe, every guy out there doesn't. I wanted to give every guy a little knowledge about how they could up their style. So, here we go. First up is the pocket square.
The Pocket Square
Brooks Brothers said it best when they said, " a well-dressed gentleman is likely to feel under dressed without a handsome handkerchief or pocket square tucked neatly into his suit jacket or sports coat." I couldn't agree more. As I get older, and the men around me do, too, I'm starting to notice that the guys that I truly consider stylish live up to this idea. Whenever they pull on a sport coat or suit jacket there is always a pocket square.
I've heard guys say that it is as essential to the outfit for a man as the perfect earrings or necklace are for the woman.
Yet, so many guys struggle with knowing how to pick a proper pocket square and, worse, how to fold it.
Here are a few tips:
1. If you don't know how to fold it, ask someone or look it up online. The easiest way to get discouraged from wearing a pocket square is not knowing how to fold it. Unless you want to create your own unique way of folding, look to someone else for help. Brooks Brothers has a wonderful tutorial, here, that teaches you how to fold a pocket square in the four basic ways: Puffed Fold, Square-End Fold, Triangle Fold, Multi-Pointed Fold.
2. Don't feel like you have to be so matchy-matchy. Just like choosing a tie, a pocket square simply needs to be complimentary. Most stylists will tell you that the pocket square should match the suit as opposed to the tie, but that's just preference. Besides, it's your style! As long as you wear it confidently there is little people can say. Especially if you've mastered the folding part.
3. Invest in a variety of pocket squares. I know a lot of guys around my age are busy investing in ties, bow ties and shoes, which are essential wardrobe accessories, but the next time you're trying to expand your wardrobe try adding a few pocket squares. Even if you think you have nothing to wear with them, buy them. Remember, tip #2! You can find them very cheap online, so don't think you have to break the bank. My Stylish Man is very economical.
Well those are just a few of my ideas on the pocket square. What are yours? Let me know!
